Homily for Good Friday

Once there was a Garden.

The serpent asked the woman:

“Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the Garden?”

So she took some fruit and ate it;  and she gave it to her husband… and the eyes of both of them were opened.

The tempter approached Jesus and said to him:

“If you are the son of God, command that these stones be turned into bread.”

“Man does not live on bread alone…”

The tempter approached Jesus a second time and said:

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from the top of this temple.”

“You shall not tempt the Lord, your God.”

The tempter approached Jesus for the third time and from the high mountain said:

“All these kingdoms I will give you if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.”

“Get away Satan!”

The devil immediately left him only to return at a later time.

Jesus took Peter James and John up to a high mountain and he was transfigured before their eyes.  And the Voice said:  “This is my beloved Son;  listen to him.”

A woman of Samaria came to draw water from the well and Jesus said: “Give me a drink” Jesus said to her:  “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst again.”

She said  “I…I.. know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ;  when he comes he will tell us everything!”

Jesus said to her  “I am he, the one who is speaking with you now.”

Jesus passed by the blind man and was questioned:  “Rabbi, who sinned?  …this man or his parents that he was born blind?”

“Neither…”       “Night is coming… While I am in the world, I am the light of the world…”   And so he spat onto the ground, made clay with his saliva and smeared the clay onto the blind man’s eyes.  He went and washed and came back able to see.

His neighbors said:  “How were your eyes opened?”

The Pharisees asked “How are you now able to see?”

His parents said  “We..we… don’t know how he sees:  Ask Him!”

Jesus said:  “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”  “Who is he sir? that I might believe in Him?”  “You have seen him…the one speaking to you is he.”

“Now,  a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany…”

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she said to Jesus:  “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Jesus told her: “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”

When Mary came to where Jesus was, she said:  “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died…”

Couldn’t the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?”

“Take away the stone.”  “Lord, by now there will be a stench…”   “Take– away– the stone…”

“Lazarus, come out!”  “Untie him and let him go free.”

“We pray you Lord, bless these branches…” “Hosanna, to the Son of David.  The King of Israel…    Hosanna in the highest!” “And when he entered Jerusalem, immediately  the whole city was shaken and asked  “Who is this?”

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciple’s feet.  “Do you understand what I have done for you?”

And immediately the tempter entered Judas and he went out.

And-it-was-night.

“Amen, Amen I say to you, one of you will betray me…”  And then Peter said… “Even if I have to die with you, I shall never deny you…”

1)  “I do not know… what you are talking about…”   2)  “I do not know the man!”  3)  “I… I… do not know the man…”

And immediately a cock crowed.

Hosanna…  Hosanna…

Two false witnesses said: “This man said he could destroy the temple and in three days rebuild it!”

Caiaphas said: “Have you no answer?  Why are these men testifying against you?”

Pilate asked:  “Are you really the King of the Jews?”

Shall I really crucify your king?”

The soldiers said:  “If you are the Son of God…then come– down– from– the cross.”

The bad thief said:   If you are the son of God save yourself and us!

The repentant thief said:  “Do you not even fear God? We are receiving what we deserve!  This man has done nothing wrong!”

“Truly I say to you… today you shall be with me in Paradise”

, My God,  Why have you abandoned me?”

“Father…forgive them.   I thirst…It is finished…”

They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths, along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.  Now, in the place where he had been crucified there was a Garden! and in the Garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.  So they lay the body of Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb… was close at hand…
